A little preparation makes all the difference. Read more on your pre-op instructions for oral sedation below. Have questions? We're a call away.
Oral sedation is a simple, comfortable way to take the edge off dental anxiety. It involves taking a prescribed pill before your appointment so you arrive feeling relaxed and at ease. To make sure everything goes smoothly and safely, please review the steps below before your visit.
Taking Your Medication
Take one pill the night before your appointment, right before bed.
Then take two more pills one hour before your scheduled appointment time.
A small sip of water with your pills is fine.
No Food or Drink Before Your Appointment
Please do not eat or drink anything for 6 hours leading up to your procedure. The only exception is the small amount of water you need to take your sedation pills.
A Note for Pregnant or Breastfeeding Patients
If there is any chance you are pregnant or you are currently breastfeeding, oral sedation is not safe for you. Please let our team know in advance so we can talk through other options.
What the Medication Will Feel Like
After your doses, expect to feel drowsy, lightheaded, or a bit out of it. That is exactly what the medication is meant to do, so there is no need to worry. Just plan ahead so you have a safe, calm space to relax in.
Arrange a Ride and a Helper
You will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment. Sedation affects your reflexes, judgment, and ability to drive safely. That same person should plan to stay with you for a few hours afterward until the medication has fully worn off.
Dress for Comfort
Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment. Choose a top with sleeves you can roll up easily in case we need access to your arm during the visit.
Update Us on Your Health
Let us know about any changes in your medical history or any new medications, vitamins, or supplements you have started since your last visit. Certain conditions and medications can interact with sedatives, and we want to make sure your treatment is both safe and effective.
Skip the Alcohol
Please avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment. Mixing alcohol with sedatives can amplify their effects and lead to safety issues.
Leave Valuables at Home
It is best to remove your jewelry and leave any valuables at home. Things can easily get misplaced while you are sedated, and we would hate for that to happen.
Plan Ahead for Aftercare
Before you head in, make sure you understand the post-op instructions for your treatment. You will likely feel a little groggy or out of sorts for several hours after sedation, so having someone at home to help you settle in is important.
A little prep ahead of your appointment goes a long way toward a smooth, stress-free visit. If you have any questions before your big day, the team at Perfect Smile Dental Care is just a phone call away.
