A little preparation and the right aftercare make all the difference. Read more on your post-op instructions for IV sedation below. Have questions? We're a call away.
IV sedation makes treatment much easier to get through, but the medication can stick with you for a while after your appointment. The next 24 hours are about resting, taking it slow, and letting your body fully clear the sedative. Please follow the steps below carefully.
Take the Day to Rest
Plan to spend the rest of the day relaxing. Skip any strenuous activity, and do not drive or operate machinery for at least 24 hours, or until you feel fully clear-headed and steady. Even if you feel mostly normal, the medication can still affect your reflexes and judgment behind the scenes.
Stay Hydrated
Sip on water and other clear fluids throughout the day. Hold off on hot drinks until any numbness in your mouth has fully worn off, since it is easy to burn yourself without realizing it.
Easing Back Into Eating
Wait until the numbness has completely faded before eating anything. When you are ready, start with soft foods like yogurt, smoothies (eaten with a spoon), mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, or applesauce. Avoid anything chewy, crunchy, or spicy for now, as these can irritate the treatment area.
Taking Your Medications
If we sent you home with prescription pain medication or antibiotics, follow the directions exactly as given. For lighter discomfort, an over-the-counter pain reliever taken according to the package instructions usually does the trick. If antibiotics were prescribed, finish the entire course even if you start to feel better partway through.
Caring for Your Mouth
Skip rinsing your mouth for the first 24 hours so the treatment area can settle. Starting the next day, you can gently rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt stirred into a cup of warm water) after meals to keep things clean. When brushing and flossing the rest of your teeth, just go easy around the surgical site.
Keep Your Follow-Up Visits
Be sure to come in for any post-op appointments we have set. These check-ins let us make sure everything is healing the way it should. In between visits, watch for warning signs like heavy bleeding, sharp pain, swelling that keeps getting worse, or anything that feels like an infection. If something seems off, call our office right away.
Easing Back Into Activity
Take it slow as you return to your normal pace. Listen to your body and rest whenever you need to. Pushing too hard too soon can set your healing back, so there is no need to rush.
No Smoking or Alcohol
Hold off on smoking for at least 24 hours, since it can really slow down healing and increase the risk of complications. Alcohol should also be avoided, especially while you are taking prescription pain medication, as the combination can be unsafe.
A quiet day of rest and a few simple precautions will help you bounce back smoothly. If anything feels wrong or you have questions along the way, the team at Perfect Smile Dental Care is just a phone call away.
