Post-Op Care: After Your Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing)

Now that your deep cleaning is complete, a little extra care over the next several days will go a long way toward helping your gums heal and keeping your smile healthy. Please review the guidelines below and reach out to our team if you have any questions.

1. Managing Tenderness

Mild soreness or sensitivity in the cleaned areas is completely normal and usually settles within a few days. If you need relief, an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen or acetaminophen works well. Just be sure to follow the dosing instructions on the package.

2. Caring for Your Mouth

Keep up with your daily brushing and flossing, but go easy around the treated gum line for the first few days. A soft-bristle toothbrush is best right now. If we sent you home with a prescription rinse or antimicrobial mouthwash, use it exactly as directed.

3. What to Skip

Please avoid tobacco in any form while your gums are healing. Smoking and chewing tobacco both slow recovery and raise your chances of infection. Also, set aside any alcohol-based mouthwashes for a few days, since they can sting and irritate sensitive tissue.

4. Eating Comfortably

For the first day or two, lean toward soft, easy-to-chew foods such as yogurt, smoothies, scrambled eggs, soups, or mashed potatoes. As your mouth feels better, you can ease back into your normal diet at your own pace.

5. Reducing Swelling

A bit of puffiness around the treated areas isn't unusual. During the first 24 hours, a cold compress applied to the outside of your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time can help calm any swelling.

6. Foods to Avoid for Now

Hard, crunchy, sticky, or chewy foods like nuts, popcorn, caramel, and tough meats can aggravate healing gums. Give them a pass for a few days while your tissues recover.

7. Stay on Track with Visits

Follow-up appointments are an important part of your gum care plan. They allow our team to check on your healing, measure your progress, and decide whether any additional cleanings or treatments would benefit you long-term.

8. Give It Time

Every patient heals at their own pace. You may notice your gums feel firmer and look healthier over the coming weeks. Real improvement takes a little patience, and that's perfectly normal.

9. When to Call Us

Reach out to Perfect Smile Dental Care right away if you notice intense pain, heavy bleeding, swelling that is getting worse instead of better, or anything else that does not feel right. We would much rather hear from you early than have a small issue turn into a bigger one.

Healing well after a deep cleaning comes down to gentle care, smart food choices, and staying in touch with our team. Stick with these steps, keep up your daily oral hygiene habits, and you will be setting your gums and your smile up for long-term health.
